The Origin of Dr. Viper is the second half of the eighth episode of season two of SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron, and the twenty-first episode overall. It is the second episode to be split into two stories.

Synopsis[]

The SWAT Kats are running a training mission through their "Reflex Room", unaware of an experiment going on at Megakat Biochemical Labs. Dr. N. Zyme and his assistant, Elrod Purvis, are testing their new Viper Mutagen 368, which uses reptilian regenerative properties to regrow plants. While N. Zyme is thrilled by the possibility of being able to benefit katkind, Purvis is more interested in making a profit. Unaware of his assistant's ulterior motives, N. Zyme calls up Mayor Manx, who provided him with a research grant, and invites him to visit the lab; Manx agrees and decides to bring Callie along.

Back in the Reflex Room, T-Bone and Razor continue their contest in a gallery of cutouts depicting various kats, with T-Bone being disqualified when he accidentally beheads one of Mayor Manx. At the lab, Purvis remains behind as Zyme is leaving for the day, only to be caught stealing the mutagen and Zyme's notes when Zyme returns for a forgotten item. Purvis attempts to flee, but ends up spattered with the mutagen in the scuffle with Zyme. The experience is seemingly fatal, and Commander Feral and the Enforcers take Purvis' body to the city morgue.

However, the mutagen apparently has a delayed reaction, and Purvis returns to life in a monstrous new form. N. Zyme, meanwhile, gets a foretaste of this when the flower he'd previously tested the mutagen on also mutates, gaining reptilian features. Unfortunately, before he can call Mayor Manx to cancel their appointment, Purvis-now calling himself Dr. Viper-arrives and takes him captive. Now determined to take over Megakat City, Viper begins mutating some insects, unaware that Commander Feral has learned of his disappearance from the morgue.

Callie and Manx arrive at the lab only to find Viper waiting for them. He soon has one of his new mutant mosquitos paralyze the two mayors, intending to have them and N. Zyme join him as monstrous hybrids. Fortunately for them, Callie manages to send a signal to the SWAT Kats, who arrive at the lab at the same time as Feral. The SWAT Kats and Enforcers are surprised to see each other, but soon forced to deal with Viper's mutant mosquitos and wasps.

T-Bone and Razor are forced to flee the building using their jetpacks and lead the wasps to a refinery where they arrange for an explosive demise. Both SWAT Kats arrive back at the lab just as Viper is about to dump the mutagen on Callie and succeed in both saving her and forcing Viper's retreat.
